Chess lessons in Marin County

For a new player, we can begin with how the pieces move, the rules of the game, and the difference between check, checkmate, and stalemate. Guided practice creates opportunities to ask questions and connect the rules to real positions.

As the fundamentals become familiar, we can work on spotting threats, checking candidate moves, and thinking about what the other player might do next.

For students ready to move beyond the basics, topics include tactics, pattern recognition, opening principles, endgames, strategy, and game analysis. We can look at a position together and explain the reasons for a move before playing it.

Reviewing a game can be as useful as playing one. A missed opportunity or an unexpected reply gives us something concrete to examine, discuss, and practice.
